Nils R Backeberg

I am Nils Backeberg and I started my geological journey in Cape Town as a field and structural geologist. Structural geology is the geometric and kinematic study of rocks and offers a holistic view of how our planet operates through the movement and deformation of our continents. Earth has taken 4.6 billion years (give or take) to shape itself into the way we see it today. As geologists we read the history embedded in the rocks and minerals an share the story that Earth has to tell.

Geology is a foundational topic that is integrated into advances in technology, global habitats, understanding the evolution of our planet, financial markets, the available chemical compounds and defining the beauty of the scenery we see on our planet. Cape Geo is a project started in 2015 to teach and learn about the geological evolution of Earth as a dynamic planet by visiting nature's most magnificent sites and discuss the societal impacts of a sustainable Earth. We use a tangible approach aimed at any level of interest by combining outdoor activities with learning about the local geology.
